Saint Josephine Bakhita

a woman from Sudan who found freedom and joy in God · feast day 8 February

When Bakhita was a little girl in Sudan, she was taken away from her family and made to work as a slave. People were very cruel to her. Later she was taken to Italy, where she met kind sisters who told her about God, who loved her more than anyone. Bakhita was baptised and became a sister herself. She was famous for her gentle smile and her kindness to everyone, and she forgave all who had hurt her.

Did you know? Her name, Bakhita, means “lucky one”. She used to call God “my Master”, who took care of her all her life.

Be like Bakhita: Give someone a kind smile, especially someone who seems lonely.

Saint Josephine Bakhita, pray for us!
