5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Mark 1:29–39

“Let us go on to the nearby villages, that I may preach there also.” Mark 1:38

Liturgical colour: Green

For grown-ups

Job speaks honestly about weary nights and days that drag on, and God can handle it. In the Gospel, Jesus meets suffering with a gentle touch: He takes Simon’s mother-in-law by the hand and lifts her up, and she immediately begins to serve. That evening the whole town gathers at the door, and Jesus heals many. Yet before dawn He slips away to pray.

Most families know long nights, sick children and full calendars. This Sunday reminds us that Jesus draws near to the tired and the unwell, and that the way we care for one another, with a held hand or a made bed, is real service. It also shows us that even Jesus needed quiet time with His Father. Parents who are stretched thin may find comfort there: prayer is not one more task, but where we are refilled, and where our children can see us return.

Dinner-table questions

  1. How did Jesus help the lady who was sick?
  2. When do you feel better after someone is kind to you?
  3. Who do you know who is sick or sad, and how could we help them?
This week’s family practice: Make a “care package” together this week, such as a drawing, a card or a snack, and take it or send it to someone who is sick, tired or lonely. Pray for them as you go.
