The Baptism of the Lord
“You are My beloved Son; with You I am well pleased.” Mark 1:11
Liturgical colour: White & goldFor grown-ups
Today we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus in the Jordan. The heavens open, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father speaks: “You are My beloved Son.” Jesus has not yet begun His public work, and the Father’s delight comes first. Isaiah, in the first reading, describes the chosen servant in the same way, someone in whom God delights.
At our own Baptism, God said something similar to each of our children, and to us. Before they can read, behave or earn anything, they are beloved. Children sense the difference between being loved for what they do and being loved simply for who they are. This week, let your words say it out loud, especially after a hard day. You might also find the baptism candle, photos or white gown, and tell the story of that day.
