30th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“You shall love your neighbour as yourself.” Matthew 22:39
Liturgical colour: GreenFor grown-ups
A lawyer tries to trap Jesus with a test: which commandment is the greatest? Jesus answers with two that cannot be pulled apart. Love God with your whole heart, soul and mind, and love your neighbour as yourself. The first reading shows what that love looks like in practice: God tells His people to protect the stranger, the widow, the orphan and the poor, because He hears their cry.
For a family, this is wonderfully simple and endlessly demanding. Love of God is learned in small daily habits: a prayer before meals, a moment of thanks at bedtime. Love of neighbour starts with the people across the dinner table, then reaches the classmate who sits alone and the helper or neighbour we barely notice. Children learn both loves best by watching us live them together, and by hearing us name them: “That was loving God,” “That was loving your neighbour.”
Dinner-table questions
- What are the two big rules Jesus gave us?
