29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar — and to God what belongs to God.” Matthew 22:21
Liturgical colour: GreenFor grown-ups
In today’s Gospel, some people try to trap Jesus with a question about paying taxes. He simply asks for a coin and whose face is on it. Caesar’s, they say, and Jesus replies, “Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar — and to God what belongs to God.” Isaiah adds that the Lord is God of everything, even rulers who do not know Him, and Paul thanks God for a community marked by faith, love and hope.
The quiet question underneath is: whose image do we carry? Our children bear God’s face, and so do we. At home, that can be as ordinary as how we speak when we are tired, how we treat the sibling who grabbed the toy, or the few minutes we give to prayer before bed. Belonging to God is not one more demand on a busy family; it is the reason each child is precious before they have done anything at all.
