Saint Martin of Tours
a soldier who shared his cloak and became a bishop · feast day 11 November
Martin was a young Roman soldier. One freezing night he saw a poor man shivering by the city gate, with nothing warm to wear. Martin took his own cloak, cut it in half with his sword, and wrapped half around the man. That night Martin dreamed of Jesus wearing the half cloak! Martin was baptised, left the army to serve God, and later became the bishop of Tours, in France, where he looked after his people with great love.
Did you know? The word “chapel” comes from the little church where Martin’s cloak (in Latin, “cappa”) was kept.
