Saint Martin de Porres

Martin grew up in Lima, in Peru, more than four hundred years ago. Some people were unkind to him because of the colour of his skin, but Martin was kind to everyone. He joined the Dominican brothers and did the humblest jobs, like sweeping the floors, with a happy heart. He cared for sick people, fed the hungry and even looked after stray cats and dogs. Martin showed that every job done with love is a gift to God.

Did you know? Martin is often shown holding a broom, because he swept so cheerfully.
